This page is practical travel orientation, not immigration, customs, legal or medical advice. Use the linked Australian and Queensland authorities for your circumstances.

Driving on an overseas licence

Queensland says a visitor may drive on a valid interstate or overseas licence, subject to its class and conditions. If the licence is not in English, carry a recognised English translation. Read the current Queensland rules before renting or driving; a rental contract can add conditions.

Left-side driving and long road days

Australia drives on the left. Plan rest, daylight and a conservative arrival buffer, especially after a long-haul flight. K’gari sand driving is a separate high-clearance 4WD task and should not be inferred from ordinary road-driving eligibility.

Biosecurity and outdoor equipment

Australian biosecurity rules apply at the border. Declare risk goods and ensure footwear and outdoor or sporting equipment is clean and free from soil, seeds and organic material. Check the current federal guidance before every trip because conditions change.

Time, phones and confirmations

Hervey Bay uses Queensland time. Queensland does not observe daylight saving, so the time difference from southern states changes seasonally. Save booking confirmations, marina names, accommodation addresses and essential contacts offline; do not assume coverage on K’gari or every marine route.

Payments, health and emergencies

Ask the card issuer about overseas fees and keep a second payment method. Check travel-insurance coverage and exclusions for marine trips, rental vehicles, 4WD use and cancellation. Call Triple Zero (000) for a serious or life-threatening emergency.

Use the local transport guide for airport and marina connections and save the official-contact directory offline.
