The short version

Know this before you plan

  • Aquavue publishes seasonal kayak and SUP hire from Torquay; check hours and wind before walking over.
  • Gotcha and Boating Hervey Bay publish boat-hire packages with different vessel boundaries and experience requirements.
  • Hervey Bay Dive Centre publishes ex-HMAS Tobruk and local-wreck dives; certification, medical and recent-dive rules apply.
  • A current first-party 2026 jet-ski product page was not reliably verifiable, so this guide does not publish a price or booking card.
  • Sheltered does not mean windless. Every self-hire plan needs a boundary, return time and cancellation/weather policy.

Kayak and SUP from Torquay

Aquavue is the clearest verified visitor hire point for kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. The operator publishes seasonal opening and school-holiday changes, which matters more than a permanent hours box. Check its current page and the actual wind before committing.

Beginners should ask about the permitted area, lifejackets, lesson/briefing, tide, wind limit and return process. A flat photograph can hide an offshore breeze. Stay within the operator’s boundary and do not treat proximity to K’gari as a self-paddle invitation.

Pair a short hire with Torquay breakfast or lunch. That keeps the day geographically compact and provides a fallback if the activity is paused.

Boat hire: competence and range matter

Gotcha and Boating Hervey Bay publish different boats and packages. Compare not only capacity and price but also the permitted operating range, fuel, safety equipment, fishing setup, licence requirements, deposit and weather terms. A larger boat does not automatically permit a larger area.

The Great Sandy Strait includes shallow water, tides, navigation hazards and marine-park zones. Be honest about experience. A skippered charter costs more but transfers responsibility to a qualified operator and can be a better fit for visitors who want the water without managing the boat.

Diving the ex-HMAS Tobruk and local wrecks

Hervey Bay Dive Centre’s Tobruk product publishes a guided double dive with an additional marine-park fee. The site also advertises local wreck diving. Certification level, recent-dive history, medical conditions, equipment and sea conditions can change eligibility.

Do not book from the wreck name alone. Ask about depth, current, penetration policy, guide ratio, equipment included and the day’s plan. K’gari Salty Safaris also publishes private scuba/freedive/snorkel charter formats but did not expose a static price suitable for this July check.

Snorkelling and jet skis: publish only what is current

Snorkelling in the region is generally a guided-product decision rather than a claim that every Hervey Bay beach has reef-quality visibility. Water clarity, site and conditions matter. Use the operator’s current itinerary and never imply a sighting guarantee.

Jet-ski experiences appear in local operator-controlled social material, but a reliable current first-party 2026 product and price could not be verified. The correct editorial action is to explain that gap and withhold a booking button until a live official page exists—not to copy an old marketplace listing.

Safety and marine-park planning

Check Bureau of Meteorology marine conditions, operator wind policy and any Queensland Maritime Safety requirements relevant to the craft. Wear the supplied safety equipment, carry communication appropriate to the boundary and follow briefings.

Great Sandy Marine Park zoning protects different areas and activities. A hire operator’s boundary does not remove the hirer’s responsibility to follow zoning and fishing rules. For diving and wildlife, additional approach and qualification rules may apply.

Practical checklist

  • Verify seasonal hours and live availability.
  • Ask about wind limits, operating boundary and safety gear.
  • Confirm licence, competence and deposit for self-hire boats.
  • Check dive certification, medical and recent-dive requirements.
  • Do not use an unverified jet-ski marketplace price.

Treat the operating boundary as part of the product

For a kayak, SUP or self-hire boat, ask where the craft may go, what wind limit applies, what safety equipment is supplied and what experience or licence is required. The bay can look protected while local wind and tide still make a hire unsuitable.

For diving, confirm certification, recent experience, medical requirements, depth, equipment and guide ratio. If a current first-party price or product page is missing, contact the operator rather than relying on an old marketplace listing.

Straight answers

Frequently asked questions

Can I hire a kayak or SUP?

Aquavue publishes seasonal kayak and SUP hire at Torquay. Check current hours, wind and availability.

Can I hire a boat without a skipper?

Local operators publish self-hire packages, subject to the vessel, licence/experience and operating boundary.

Can I dive the ex-HMAS Tobruk?

Hervey Bay Dive Centre publishes guided Tobruk dives. Certification, medical, recent-dive and condition requirements apply.

Is there jet-ski hire?

A local operator presence was found, but a reliable first-party 2026 product page and price were not verified. Check directly before relying on it.

Is the bay always calm?

No. K’gari reduces ocean swell, but wind can create chop and unsafe self-hire conditions.
