Choose the park by area

Torquay Beachfront Tourist Park and Scarness Beachfront Tourist Park place travellers in the central Esplanade rhythm, with beach, path and dining nearby. They suit families and caravans that want to leave the vehicle set up while walking locally.

Point Vernon and western park stock suit quieter stays, anglers, dogs under policy and travellers happy to drive. Pialba-area parks can be practical for shopping and WetSide. None is automatically the easiest early whale departure; map the marina route.

Arriving with a long rig

Send the tow vehicle, caravan body, drawbar and total combined length before booking. Ask whether the site is drive-through or back-in, slab or grass, and whether trees, kerbs, parked cars or narrow internal roads affect the turn. ‘Big rig’ is a marketing label until the dimensions are accepted in writing.

Plan fuel and grocery stops before the final approach instead of taking a long combination through unfamiliar Esplanade parking. Confirm after-hours arrival, boom-gate width and where a second vehicle or trailer may stand. Nothing should be left in a marina, River Heads or residential car park on assumption.

Sites, cabins and real total price

A powered site, unpowered site, studio cabin and family villa are separate products. Compare the exact occupancy, linen, bathroom, kitchen, parking, air-conditioning and cancellation policy. A site headline price should never be used on a cabin card.

For cabins, add service and cleaning terms; for sites, check vehicle size, slab/grass, power, water and awning space. Long rigs need dimensions, not a generic “big rig friendly” tag.

Family facilities

Pools, playgrounds, camp kitchens and games facilities can make a park the holiday rather than only the bed. Verify current operation, supervision and whether a facility appears at the exact park—not a chain-wide page.

An Esplanade park can reduce meal and beach transfers. A larger-facility park inland or west may offer more on-site activity. Decide which reduces the group’s daily friction.

Pets

Ask whether the exact site or cabin accepts the exact dog, any size/number limits, fees, vaccination documentation and unattended-pet rule. Many parks allow dogs on selected sites but not cabins, or exclude peak periods.

Use the council dog-zone map for exercise. A park’s pet policy does not confer off-leash rights on the nearest beach.

Seasonality and minimum stays

Winter attracts caravans and overlaps the whale season. Spring school holidays combine family and whale demand. Easter and Christmas/New Year may trigger minimum stays and different cancellation terms; Sunlodge’s 2026 policy explicitly identified Easter/Christmas as high season.

Book once dates and rig/cabin needs are known, particularly for a beachfront site, family cabin or pet-approved product. Avoid a blanket “Hervey Bay sells out” statement.

Using a park for whales, K’gari or fishing

For a whale cruise, ask about early vehicle movement, gate hours and the marina drive. For K’gari, clarify trailer/vehicle storage and River Heads timing. For fishing, ask about boat/trailer parking, fish-cleaning facilities and local rules without assuming.

The best park is the one that supports the actual equipment and departure, not the one with the longest facilities list.

Choose the site around the rig and the first departure

Confirm rig length, slide-outs, surface, power, sullage, amenities and late-arrival procedure for the exact site. A park accepting caravans does not establish that every site fits a large van or that a boat can remain attached.

During whale season and Queensland school holidays, beachfront and larger powered sites deserve earlier checking. If the trip starts with an early cruise or River Heads ferry, map the towing route and decide whether staying hitched is actually practical.
